Six teachers and coaches whose identities have not been revealed were detained on Sunday and expelled for getting drunk and invading the building reserved for students and athletes “to satisfy their lustful passions” at the Gaza School Games, Notícias reports.
The six, two from Niassa and one each from Tete, Zambezia, Cabo Delgado and Maputo city, are already homeward bound after being caught by Governor’s Palace security guards posted to reinforce order at the event.
“They had been drinking and invaded the girls’ homes. It is an ugly attitude and they will get what they deserve,” a source at the Ministry of Education and Human Development said. “At the moment they are detained and are waiting in the cells for the verdict, but I can tell you that the first step will be to send them away.”
Cases of indiscipline, usually alcohol-fuelled, are frequent at the games. Zambezia’s women’s basketball coach, for example, is facing a lawsuit over drinking alcohol at a match on Sunday morning. Many technicians and heads of delegations drink before, during and after the games.
MINEDH says it expressly forbids the consumption of alcohol by delegation members, but the battle seems far from won.
