Twenty companies have been licensed to prospect for diamonds in Gaza’s Chicualacuala and Massangena districts.
The licensing comes in the wake of confirmation by a Mozambican consortium of the presence of diamonds in Massangena as a result of prospecting and research work conducted in 2014 and 2015.
The Provincial Director of Mineral Resources and Energy in Gaza, Castro Elias, said that next November, Mozambique would apply for membership of the Kimberley International Conference of Diamond Producing Countries and, if approved, the province may register many further requests for exploration licenses.
“For the export of diamonds, the country must be part of the Kimberley group. Unfortunately our country is not yet part of this group. The next conference will be held in November, and Mozambique will apply for membership then,” Elias said.
Elias said that there was optimism regarding the continuity of investment, since investors pay the annual tax in advance to ensure the maintenance of the license.
