Gapi Investment Society celebrates 27 years – Mozambique

On 1 March 1990, the Board of Directors of the People’s Development Bank (BPD) and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Board (FFE) formalized the conversion of a German-funded project supporting small-scale industry into a national company.
Gapi, Lda began life with three national employees and one German, initial capital equivalent to 70,000 Meticais and an office at FFE’s facilities on Avenida Tomás Nduda in Maputo converted from a garage.
From that modest start, Gapi has, over the course of 27 years, established a network of representations and partner institutions that allows it to operate in 105 districts within a total of 12 development programs focusing on food security, financial inclusion and rural finance, as well as promotion of entrepreneurship among youth and women.
Today, Gapi is recognized as one of the best performers in the African Development Finance Institutions forum. It has a shareholder structure based on a public-private partnership and is registered as an Investment Company (Gapi-SI) regulated by the Law of Credit Institutions and Financial Companies.
Its total assets amount to around 2.3 billion Meticais, and it has a staff of 150 employees.
