A gang stole more than four million meticais ( around US$65,414 at current exchange rates) from a bank branch in Dómuè, Angónia district, Tete province last Friday, it has been revealed.
Police spokeswoman Deolinda Matsinhe said the criminals held bank workers at gunpoint during the robbery and used a bank vehicle found abandoned 50 kilometres from the scene in their escape.
According the Rádio Moçambique, Matsinhe said that “the alleged criminals perpetrated the crime outside normal business hours, taking advantage of the absence of the guard, who was at the back of the building spending [the time of ] the day’s meal”.
The police were already on the perpetrators’ trail, Matsinhe told Radio Mozambique.
“At this moment, the proceedings are still ongoing to clarify the case. We have a team on the ground investigating what actually happened,” she said.
