On September 2, 2022, Galp signed an Understanding Memorandum with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Mozambique (MCTES) and the Institute of Cooperation and Language (Camões, I.P.) aiming at the creation of the Oil and Gas Reference Centre in Cabo Delgado.
On the Mozambican part, the memorandum was signed by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Daniel Nivagara, and on the Portuguese part the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho.
The Centre is intended to reinforce the national science system, technology and innovation in the fields of energy, environment and mineral resources, and to disseminate knowledge in these areas in order to prepare future generations for the challenges of the energy sector.
Galp will finance and support the training areas through PhD scholarships for teachers from Lúrio University as well as teachers from other academic institutions across Mozambique. The PhD programs will encompass fields such as petroleum engineering among others and will be conducted by the Instituto Superior Técnico , a partner of Camões, I.P in the scope of Projecto+Emprego. Galp will further support specialisation programs and scholarships for technical education teachers as well as professional internships for young graduates from Cabo Delgado.
To the administrator of Galp, Teresa Abecasis, the Oil & Gas Reference Center of Cabo Delgado “will optimise the dissemination of knowledge sectors that are fundamental for the social and economic development of Cabo Delgado and of Mozambique as a whole. Galp, as a relevant player of the energy industry, performs in a responsible way while contributing to the development of the countries where it operates directly through investment and the promotion of job creation as well as the support of the economic activity and wellbeing of the families of the community. This project is another example of the commitment of Galp with Mozambican families.
