Cetmar / Coastal fisherpeople in Mozambique
Technicians from the Technological Centre of Marine Affairs (Cetmar) are travelling to Mozambique to train staff from scientific institutes in cephalopod stock assessment and in sampling for mollusk farming.
Contributing to the fight against poverty and living condition boost and food security in rural and coastal communities in the province of Cabo Delgado is the general objective of the actions being carried out by Cetmar Foundation in Mozambique together with the National Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (IDEPA) and of the National Institute of Fisheries Research (IIP).
Cetmar, which has been working with the African country on different projects since 2006, has been funded by Xunta de Galicia through the Galician Cooperation for the performance of this project, which began in January this year and will end in December, 2017.
The scheduled activities are intended to increase the sources of sustainable income for the rural and coastal communities of Cabo Delgado through the consolidation of aquaculture in the area and strengthening fisheries research. To this end, and more specifically to increase the scientific knowledge towards the sustainable management of marine resources in Mozambique, several actions are planned for the coming weeks.
Thus, IIP technicians and showers will participate in the course organized by Cetmar Foundation, which will be held from November 16 to 18. Its objective is to strengthen its capacities in cephalopod stock assessment based on octopus and squid sampling protocols, designed by the Galician institution in previous projects.
In addition to this national seminar, another project activity will begin, which consists of the evaluation of areas for mollusk (oyster and mussel) seed capture from the natural environment. In this way, IIP technicians will be supported in carrying out the necessary sampling and in the evaluation of the results from the available protocols for the purpose and adapted to the characteristics of the area by Cetmar. The mission of the technicians of the Galician Foundation in Mozambique also contemplates a visit to the Mueda and Montepuez aquaculture projects, located in Cabo Delgado.
Other initiatives carried out by Cetmar in Mozambique
This activity gives continuity to the actions carried out in June on the land, also with the presence of Cetmar staff, and which consisted of training for fish farmers on the use of the aquaculture logbook, considered a basic tool to understand the development of the farmed product.
In addition, taking advantage of the good results of other tilapia farming experiences in the area, an exchange of good management practices and marketing initiatives were encouraged among the farmers of the province of Cabo Delgado. Finally, a program to monitor the use of the aquaculture logbook was designed and implemented and was integrated into the work program of extensionists’ service.
The project will end with the support of Cetmar Foundation in the field of fisheries research through the design of a productive model for mollusk farming, actions to be carried out by the IIP. In the field of aquaculture, the development and updating of the census of fish farmers has been scheduled in the province of Cabo Delgado, a measure to be implemented by IDEPA.
