Mozambique: Trucks again block the N4 highway to South Africa
SOICO Fundation (O País)
As part of a programme being launched in February next year, the Soico foundation has offered a cheque worth 120,000 meticais to the Luana Semeia Sorrisos Cooperative, and the mothers and children of the cooperative were all songs and smiles as they received the Soico Foundation on Wednesday afternoon.
“I want to thank Muktar because he was the one who brought me here and we were very touched. We have decided to do something for you, so we are here again today. And he also participated in this support. From here, we will all work together to make a bigger leap in February than this one. But this will only happen if we stick together. We have to believe that together we can make a big leap. We hope this support will help meet some basic needs,” FUNDASO Chairman Daniel David said.
The donation will help solve an old problem: the transport of children with special needs. “This amount represents a lot to us and will help us solve the transportation problem. Whenever we want to leave, we have to rent a car. But with this amount, we think we can buy a bus of our own. Of course we have other needs, but this will be our priority,” the general director of the cooperative, Benilde Mourana, explained.
Mourana spoke with feeling about the difficulties mothers face in raising their children. The cooperative is made up of mothers and accommodates 33 children with disabilities. One of these mothers is Elisa Fumo, the mother of three children, one of whom is disabled. “The second is a four-year-old girl who had severe asphyxia during delivery and caught cerebral palsy. As a result, she cannot walk or sit, she cannot speak and her body doesn’t hold itself up,” Elisa explained.
Before becoming aware of the cooperative, Elisa remembers that she was an unhappy mother. “I thought I was the only one with this problem. I looked at my daughter and cried every day. But after hearing other’s stories, I realized that you have to be strong. And here in the cooperative we share experiences,” she said with relief.
The support that FUNDASO is providing to the cooperative was made possible by the intervention of several partners. One of them is Muktar Abdul Carimo, who has shown himself committed to solidarity causes. “I’ve always wanted to embrace solidarity causes and I immediately thought of Daniel David – to associate with him, because I saw that he also has this interest. I will continue as a FUNDASO partner and donor,” he said.
Beside financial support and food, hygiene products and toys, Soico foundation will promote motivational lectures for the mothers of the cooperative.
About the Cooperative
Located in the Mahotas neighbourhood in the city of Maputo, the Cooperativa Luana Semeia Sorrisos was created in 2016. The name of the institution is a tribute to the daughter of the director-general, Luana, who died at the age of two from a rare disease. If she were alive, Luana would be six years old today. The cooperative was founded with three other mothers who also had children with special needs.
