Two women hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a clash on Friday night between Mozambican police and residents of Ressano Garcia, on the border with South Africa, say that they were shot by the commander of the Ressano Garcia Frontier Guard himself.
Interviewed in Maputo Central Hospital by the independent television staton STV, Dercilia Mulhui said “Police from the Frontier Guard and from the regular police came and began to shoot. First, they were shooting in the air, but then they began to shoot against people. The commander pointed his gun at us and shot us”.
Her companion, Aida Cambula, confirmed her story, and declared categorically “it was the Commander of the Frontier Guard who shot us”.
The two women also said they had been visited by people they did not know, but who identified themselves as agents of the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC). They said they interrogated the two victims, and then disappeared.
Atilio Morais, the surgeon who cared for the two women, said they were lucky to be alive. “The patients were shot by a firearm in the chest, which is a vital region. I can say that, if it were not for their good luck, they would not have survived”.
Asked about the incident, the spokesperson for the General Command of the Mozambican police, Inacio Dina, said “every policeman knows that at no time should he fire against defenceless citizens and take their lives. And if he is trying to neutralize them, he should not aim his weapon at their chest”.
“We are investigating the case”, said Dina, “so as to understand why the restoration of public order in Ressano Garcia ended like this”.
