Residents of Murrapaniua neighbourhood, Filipe Samuel Magaia Unidade Communal, in Nampula, are seeking clarification on the alleged sale of the Muanona market.
According to residents, the site has been assigned to a citizen who plans is to build a house there. They are worried, since they say they exercised their commercial activities there.
Residents who spoke to ‘Rádio Encontro Nampula’ are demanding clarification from the municipality about the alleged sale since, sources say, they instead expected a market to be built there.
“We don’t want any residences built here,” they explained. “This place was reserved for a market long ago, when Namuaca was mayor. We want a market, not a residence.”
The owner of the plot, Patricio Xavier, says the transfer is recompense for another plot of his in the ‘Não me Toca’ [Don’t Touch Me] area being taken by former Frelimo secretary Cariso for use as a police station. After consultations, the disputed space was given to him in exchange.
“This space was assigned to me by Mr. Cariso, former secretary of Frelimo, in compensation for my house being occupied by the police in the area of Não me Toca. I don’t know why people are so agitated about this space. I have all the documents that authorise the construction of my residence, all signed by the competent authorities. Anyone who wants information about the plot should get in touch with Mr. Cariso, the person who sold it to me,” he explains.
The plot in dispute does have one building on it, which, according to residents, was once a school, but it closed long ago.
If the worst is not to happen, the competent entities must intervene as quickly as possible, because the arm wrestling between residents and the new owner shows no sign of abating.
