The Political Commission of the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) yesterday called on the government to take action and hold accountable the perpetrators of armed attacks in Mocímboa da Praia and its surroundings in the north of the country.
The conflict ongoing since October was addressed at Wednesday’s meeting of the Frelimo Political Commission in Maputo and gave rise to the party position expressed in a statement yesterday.
More than 20 people were killed in the episodes, including attackers, security forces, military officers and residents.
An armed group, of unknown origin but apparently of Islamic inspiration, attacked police stations in October and laid siege to the town of Mocímboa da Praia for two days, followed by attacks on villages in the bush, but without any claims of responsibility being made.
“The Political Commission praises civil society for its demonstrations in repudiation and condemnation of these attacks against public order, security and tranquillity,” yesterday’s Frelimo’s statement adds.
Mozambican police have said that 300 more people have been detained since October on suspicion of involvement in the violent episodes, whose origin and motivation remain unclear.
