Marcelino dos Santos, a founding member of the Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo), turned 89 on Sunday to congratulations from relatives, friends and national personalities.
Born on May 20, 1929, in Lumbo, district of Ilha de Moçambique, Nampula province, Dos Santos became a nationalist at a young age, and soon embraced the liberation cause.
He wrote the first statutes of the organisation which arose from the union of the three nationalist movements, UDENAMO, MANU and UNAMO.
During a long political career at the service of the Mozambican state, Dos Santos occupied the post of Minister of Planning and Development in the first post-independence government, and left office with the creation of the Popular Assembly, where he was president until the first multiparty elections in 1994.
In the cultural arena, Dos Santos stood out as one of the most distinguished names in combat poetry. His texts, published under the pseudonyms Lilinho Micaia and Kalungano, inspired several generations of writers.
