The President of Frelimo, Filipe Nyusi, says that the Second Ordinary Session of the party’s Central Committee constitutes an exemplary opportunity to strengthen the structure’s leadership in the service of the promotion of national development and prosperity for the benefit of all citizens.
Nyusi, who is also the President of the Republic, was speaking on Friday (24-03) in the city of Matola in Maputo province at the opening of the two-day event. He said he hoped that the session would enable the free sharing of opinions in an open, sincere and objective manner, always with due respect among members.
“Our greatest hope is that this session will strengthen the leadership of Frelimo in its project to promote national development and prosperity for all Mozambicans,” he said.
In a more somber vein, Nyusi reported that the current rainy season had killed 288 citizens and affected 210,000 families between since October last year.
Speaking next, the Mozambican Women’s Organization (OMM), the Frelimo social organization which last week celebrated its 50th anniversary, pledged to do everything it could to ensure universal involvement in the local election process.
The OMM representative added that the promotion of peace and national unity, being one of the fundamental bases for the harmonious development of the country, were the bedrock of OMM activities.
“Therefore, we strongly condemn all acts conducive to violence. We repudiate all kinds of demonstrations aimed at disturbing public order, security and tranquility,” she stressed.
The OMM says that, as Frelimo’s social arm, it will continue to consolidate women’s emancipation and promote their participation in political, economic and social life, promoting tolerance and reconciliation with a view to the construction of a fair, democratic and united society.
“As mothers, we are in favor of a hard-working, enterprising youth that preserves the nation’s history, values and patriotic principles,” she added.
The session agenda includes consideration of the Performance Balance of Municipalities; CC Verification Report, Balance Report on Government Performance; Proposal of the Party’s Five-Year Plan; Proposed Activity Plan and Party Budget; Information on the Social Economic Plan; Revision of the Regulation of the Verification Committees; Election of Effective and Alternate Members of the CC and Members of the CC Secretariat and other miscellaneous items.
Frelimo’s Central Committee is its highest governing body between congresses, and is made up of 230 members and 23 substitutes elected by congress, plus first secretaries of the Provincial Committees of the city of Maputo and representatives of the social arms of the party. The Ordinary Session took place on the 24th to the 25th of this current month.
Eminent among those present were former presidents of the party, Joaquim Chissano and Armando Guebuza.
