Mozambique: Chapo calls on police "to do things differently"
Members of Frelimo in parliament on Thursday requested the attorney general to initiate criminal proceedings against Renamo, who they blame for the current wave of military attacks in some areas of Sofala and Manica.
The demand was made by the deputy head of Frelimo in parliament, Sergio Pantie, during a debate.
In addition to criminal action, Frelimo is also asking for financial sanctions including the freezing of any monies Renamo receives for its parliamentary representation.
According to Mozambican lawyer Elisio de Sousa, although both avenues of action are possible, they may not proceed in the way that Frelimo demands.
The government itself however, apparently oblivious to these demands, continues to say, at least in public, that dialogue is the solution to the current political and military tension in the country.
