Mozambique’s ruling party has expressed its confidence in the ability of its leader Filipe Nyusi to lead it to “future triumphs” in the 2018 general elections.
“The Frelimo Central Committee has confidence in the ability of Comrade Filipe Jacinto Nyusi to lead the party to future triumphs,” a motion read on Friday at the close of the 6th Ordinary Session of the Frelimo Central Committee declared.
“Nyusi, we trust you,” Dulce Canhenga said at a closing ceremony marked by songs and support for the current head of state and Frelimo president. The message read by Canhenga did not however explicitly state that Filipe Nyusi would be the party’s candidate for the 2019 presidential election, attempting a second term after winning it in 2014.
In his closing remarks, Filipe Nyusi said that the results of the Central Committee session and the phases leading up to the meeting showed that Frelimo was prepared to continue to direct the country’s destinies.
“We lead by example. We operate democratically within the party, which is why Frelimo will continue to influence society,” the head of state said.
President Nyusi pointed out that his party’s maturity was demonstrated in the “depth and frankness” with which the Central Committee meeting took place.
During the two days of the session, Frelimo approved the regimen and agenda of the 11th Party Congress scheduled for September 26 to October 1 this year.
The meeting, whose early finishing was announced on Friday after initially being scheduled for Saturday, also approved a proposal to revise the party statutes, but details were not disclosed to the press.
The Central Committee is Frelimo’s most important decision-making body in the interval between party congresses.
