Mozambique Elections: Quelimane mayor calls for demonstrations throughout Zambézia from Friday ...
The Central Committee of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party has again condemned the armed attacks waged by the rebel movement Renamo and has reaffirmed that dialogue is the only path to peace.
Briefing reporters on Thursday on the current meeting of the Central Committee, which is being held behind closed doors at the Frelimo central school in the southern city of Matola, the Party’s Secretary for Mobilisation and Propaganda, Antonio Niquice, said the Committee stressed that Renamo should not continue attacking defenceless citizens or pursuing acts of harassment and blackmail in order to achieve political goals.
He pointed out that President Filipe Nyusi has already set up a team to prepare a dialogue with Renamo. But so far Renamo has not responded to the calls that it too should appoint a preparatory team.
“The Central Committee recognizes the merit of the stance in favour of dialogue taken by the Head of State who, despite his heavy agenda, has found the time to receive and interact with individuals and all the live forces of society, with the purpose of gathering ideas about how to lead the country”, said Niquice.
The Central Committee, he added, “noted with satisfaction that President Nyusi has been leading the country in a didactic and educational manner, ensuring the rule of law, in order to preserve peace”.
He added that, on the first day of the meeting (Wednesday) the Central Committee “analysed the internal elections in the party, and concluded that they had strengthened inner-party democracy”, said Niquice.
The meeting also discussed the preparation of the Frelimo electoral machinery for the forthcoming municipal and general elections (in 2018 and 2019, respectively), on the longstanding Frelimo principle that “victory is prepared, and victory is organised”.
On Thursday, Niquice said, the Central Committee will continue discussing questions concerned with the search for peace and with the economic situation of the country. Invited guests, from the intellectual and academic worlds, have been invited to participate “to enrich the debate”.
