Mozambique Elections: Renamo condemns police killings during demonstrations
The Frelimo party has opened a disciplinary case against Samora Machel Júnior (Samito) for trying to run in last October’s municipal elections in a way that may have violated the party’s statutes, Voa Portugues reports.
According to the same source, there is talk in some Maputo circles of the eventual expulsion from the party of the son of the first president of Mozambique, Samora Machel.
But Abílio Forquilha, of AJUDEM and also a Frelimo member, believes that the disciplinary action is a mere formality, and that Samito’s expulsion is unlikely.
“The Frelimo party is not at this moment, I think, in a position to take measures leading to the expulsion of Samora Machel Junior and other members … It would almost be like shooting oneself on the foot.”
Journalist and lawyer Egídio Plácido says that Samito did violate Frelimo’s statutes by trying to dispute the election for another political force, in this case AJUDEM, and if the Verification Committee were to follow the bylaws strictly, there is a possibility of Samora Machel Junior being expelled from the party his father directed for many years.
Placido however notes that Samito is not just any member of Frelimo: “He is someone who exerts huge influence.”
