Mozambique: Inclusive Dialogue Commission calls for applications
The Frelimo branch in Malema district (Nampula Province) believes that the armed action staged by Renamo – characterised by the shooting of various goods trains operating along the Nacala corridor – are mainly aimed at halting the government’s efforts to restore economy of the country.
According to Lourenço Armando, first secretary of the ruling party in Malema, Renamo has a tendency to stage war against the national economy. In less than a month, armed Renamo men attacked three trains travelling through the administrative Mutuali post in Malema.
“There are still those who have doubts about the real intentions behind the attacks carried out by Renamo; whatdo they [Renamo] want to achieve when prevent trains from transporting our riches for export?” asked Armando, accusing Renamo of orchestrating attacks to prevent the collection of revenue and thus preventing the bolstering of the economy.
According to Armando, Afonso Dhlakama focuses the Renamo militia’s efforts on discrediting the potential that the country has to ensure that goods flow for export, from the hinterland to the sea via the Port of Nacala. However, the
politician believes that the population has its opportunity to participate in the defence of sovereignty, through actions aimed at strengthening national unity, vigilance and denunciation of the manoeuvres carried out by the enemies of peace.
Armando maintains that Renamo is trying to destabilise the economy of Nampula Province, with the aim of creating a climate of fear among the population of Malema in the hopes that they will give up farming, which supports a large portion of the population in the province. Malema district is considered the “breadbasket” of Nampula Province. It produces food crops throughout the year and is bordered by Cuamba district, in the neighbouring province of Niassa, also rich in agricultural resources.
Recently, armed Renamo men have carried out armed attacks in the districts of Maua, Metarica and Nipepe. These attacks targeted government and social infrastructure.
