Admission of candidates for Frelimo membership, Mozambique’s ruling party, will now be preceded by a scrutiny of a period over 90 days.
This is one of the decisions taken by the 12th Congress, announced on Tuesday by party’s president, Filipe Nyusi, during a rally held in the municipality of Matola, southern Maputo province, which marked the end of 12th Congress of Frelimo.
“Admission of party members will, from now on, be preceded by an observation period of over 90 days”, said the President.
According to Nyusi, this and other decisions seek to strengthen the organisation and internal discipline of the ruling party and were decided during a review and clarification of its statutes, “in order to respond today’s challenges.
As part of the revision of its statutes, Frelimo now has honorary members of the Central Committee.
“The criteria and process for selecting these honorary members will be defined by a specific directive to be approved by the Central Committee, which sets out their rights and duties,” he explained.
“The first six honorary members have already been proclaimed, and are those who were present when Frelimo was founded in 1962, but also former general secretaries,” he added.
Nyusi also said that, within the framework of internal organisation and discipline, Frelimo members should refrain from committing acts that only tarnish both the ruling party’s image and of its leaders.
On other decisions made by the Congress, Nyusi said “We also discussed the issue of national unity, which should always be nurtured. We discussed the party’s programme for the period 2022/2027.”
As for the importance of peace consolidation, Nyusi said that it was unanimously agreed on the need to boost the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) capability to deal with terrorism.
He praised the work carried out by party members, militant cadres, sympathisers and the Mozambican people in general in various sectors of political, economic and social life.
The Congress also took notice on the production of food crops, which show a remarkable increase over the last few years.
In his brief speech, Nyusi announced that party brigades, which soon will be deployed to all Mozambican provinces, would disclose full details of the decisions taken by the Congress.
During the rally, Nyusi also introduced to his audience new members of the Political Commission, the Central Committee and the Secretary General, among others.
