Members of Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo Party are meeting in the southern city of Matola, from Saturday to Monday, to harmonise ideas about the country’s political, economic and social life in preparation for the Party’s 11th congress, scheduled for September 2017.
Speaking at a Maputo press conference on Friday, the Frelimo General Secretary, Eliseu Machava, said that about 3,000 delegates and guests will attend this cadre conference. It has become a Party norm to hold such conferences prior to Congrsses. They are largely a discussion forum and cannot take decisions that bind the party.
Machava said the themes that will be at the centre of attentions have already been discussed in the Party’s branches and committees, and include national unity, peace, governance ethics and decentralization.
“These are themes that concern Frelimo in the search for solutions to better serve and help in creating the well-being of the people”, Machava added. “The meeting will allow Party militants to interact and bring the necessary dynamism so that there will be no doubt that the Congress will be a success”.
The themes to be harmonised and enriched at the cadre conference will form the bases for the theses to be put before next year’s Congress.
Machava said the meeting will be a moment for sharing ideas about the life of Mozambicans in pursuit of an ever more prosperous and developed Mozambique.
Asked whether Frelimo is doing anything to speed up a return to peace, Machava claimed that Frelimo is doing what it should do, by transmitting the message that peace is a matter that concerns everyone, and is indispensable for the development of Mozambique.
He declared that Frelimo trusts the team appointed by President Filipe Nyusi to negotiate with the rebel movement Renamo in the Joint Commission set up with the main task of organising a face-to-face meetings between Nyusi and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama.
