Frelimo Central Committee called on Friday for the courts to hold members of opposition party Renamo and its leader, Afonso Dhlakama, criminally responsible for alleged attacks on civilians.
“Given the raids by Afonso Dhlakama and Renamo which endanger peace, and because Mozambique is a country of law and democracy, the Central Committee calls on law institutions to hold accountable all those who act outside the law, creating panic among the population,” Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) spokesman Antonio Niquice said at a press conference summarising proceedings on the third day of the Frelimo Central Committee session.
Asked if Frelimo believes that the Renamo leader has direct responsibility for the attacks attributed by the authorities to Renamo’s armed wing in centre of the country, Niquice said that that was the perception of the Mozambican people.
“This is the perception of the Mozambican people. The people of Mozambique call for peace and have strongly condemned the attacks. Peace can not be held to ransom, it is priceless,” he said.
Niquice said that it was against the law for a political party to hold weapons, and that Renamo’s actions were therefore criminal in nature, the meeting nevertheless exhorted President Nyusi to focus on dialogue to resolve the military crisis.
“The CC considers that peace should be achieved through dialogue, and reiterates the call made by Comrade President Filipe Nyusi and all the forces of Mozambican society on Renamo to respond positively to the call for dialogue,” Niquice said.
