Frelimo in the city of Maputo, held several cultural activities to mark the festivities of the fifty years of the Second Congress of the ruling party.
Frelimo held its Second Congress – its first in Mozambique – from July 20 to 25, 1968. The so-called ‘Victory Congress’, held in Matchedje, Niassa province, laid down the frmaework of the party’s governance, culminating in the liberation of the country.
At the Hulene camp on Saturday, July 2, Frelimo first secretary Francisco Mabjaiathe brought the festivities to a close.
“All this we thought could be a way of contributing to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the second Frelimo congress. We do this because, as we know, the combatants, even after the national liberation struggle, have found moments for entertainment,” Mabjaia said.
The event was marked by several cultural activities such as a health fair, gastronomy, video exhibition, identity card and tax identification number issuing and football matches.
Residents attending the event expressed their satisfaction.
“It went well, I was measuring blood-pressure and I’m fine – I do not have high blood pressure,” said Olga Francisco.
“I’ve been here to find out about my state of health and it’s good. Sometimes don’t have time, so this opportunity has helped us find out more about our state of health,” David Paulo added.
Frelimo took advantage of the occasion to deliver membership cards to the hundreds of citizens who flocked to the party.
The Second Frelimo Congress re-elected Eduardo Mondlane as party president, a role he did not exercise for much longer, being on February 3 of the following year assassinated by a letter bomb in neighbouring Tanzania.
