The Mozambican National Liberation Front (Frelimo) and Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) parties on Saturday (25.11) presented their candidates for the by- election in the city of Nampula, capital of the province of the same name.
The vote, scheduled for January 24, 2018, was called after the assassination of mayor Mahamudo Amurane in October.
The ruling party in Mozambique, Frelimo, is feeling 58-year-old Amisse Khololo, a party member since his youth. He has held various positions in the government and is currently the director of the technical secretary of the Nampula Provincial Assembly. Khololo, the party’s only internal candidate, was elected by acclamation with all 75 participant votes.
Amisse Khololo said in his inaugural speech as a candidate that if he won the election, he would create a contingency plan for natural disasters during the rainy season, which will coincide with the eight months of his term.
“Now we are entering the rainy season in Nampula and so we have to take precautions, having the contingency plan so that we can address any difficulties that may arise,” he said.
Khololo said his candidacy was a challenge imposed on him by his comrades, and promised to fulfil his party’s expectations.
Deputy of the Assembly of the Republic will represent Renamo
Also by consensus and without internal opposition, Renamo has named 57-year-old member of parliament Paulo Vahanle as candidate.
This is the first time that Renamo is running in municipal elections in Nampula, having boycotted the 2013 elections on the grounds of alleged irregularities, and which the MDM’s Mahamudo Amurane won.
Paulo Vahanle promised to provide citizens of Nampula with potable water, and pointed out as challenges to the next government the improvement of roads and garbage collection in the city.
“I never counted on this nomination, it was a surprise, but Renamo members in Nampula have put their trust in me, so I have to accept the nomination. Citizens should expect a decent treatment, a better city than this,” he said.
First party to submit a candidate
Filomena Mutoropa, the Mozambique Humanitarian Party (PAHUMO) candidate who also competed in 2013, also presented herself on November 9. She said she would be inspired by Amurane’s term towards the continuous improvement in living conditions for the citizens of Nampula.
“We will create good conditions for the citizens of Nampula, by providing water, electricity, roads, garbage removal and everything else that is necessary for the good of citizens,” she said.
The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) has not yet submitted a candidate, but Nampula MDM delegate Luciano Tarieque said that a name would soon, internal election the same being currently underway.
According to the electoral calendar issued by the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), candidates must be presented by December 7th.
