Frelimo accuses Renamo of killing two political leaders in Mossurize

Two members of the Frelimo party have been killed In Nhachato, Manica province, with local police assigning responsibility to armed Renamo men and Renamo in turn denying any part in the incidents.

The two Frelimo members, Jacobo Filipe Matabeia, 38, and Tomás Nglishe Sigauque , 42, were killed in their homes in front of their families last week, with Manica police spokesperson Elcidia Filipe attributing the action to armed Renamo men .

Filipe told DW Africa that four men armed with AKM-type weapons went to the victims’ homes. The first victim was killed with a stone and the second beaten to death with a stick.

“When the relatives of the first deceased tried to give assistance, the armed men shot in the air to stop them. The descriptions given create a strong suspicion that they are the same who killed another citizen on the same day,” Filipe said.

“Steps are underway to arrest these men, and Defence and Security Forces are already on the ground and in pursuit,” the spokesperson said.

Misrepresentation of information

Contacted by DW Africa on Tuesday, Sofrimento Matequenha, provincial political delegate of the largest opposition party in Mozambique, Renamo, said that political issues have their ways, with the ruling party (Frelimo) misrepresenting situations and often using social networks as the main weapon to divert attention.

“As we do not have this power to use journalists to convey information and speak the truth, everything ends up falling on us. We are always truthful, and do not like to pass out information that does not correspond to the truth. Talk about the attacks is difficult because it is a military branch that I do not belong to. I am from the political branch” Matequenha explained.

Matequenha denies that the actions were carried out by his party and adds that the Defense and Security Forces daily burn people’s houses but it never comes out in the press. “Everything that is happening in Mossurize is the responsibility of the Defence and Security Forces. The FDS even dismantled the mills of the population in Magu, Garagwa and Mucarati. Are the people to blame for voting Renamo?”

Both two parties have recently been accused of kidnappings, murder and mounting attacks. The three districts in Manica province most often the scene of attacks, killings, abductions and other armed actions are Mossurize, Manica and Báruè.
