A four-year-old boy was abducted in Lichinga, Niassa province, on Friday by two individuals whose identities are as yet unknown.
Niassa provincial police spokesman Alves Mate said the child was being accompanied to the Infantil kindergaten in Bairro Popular by another child, aged ten years, when he was snatched.
“Two men on a motorcycle without license plates intercepted the two children in a street in the Bairro Popular, and quickly spirited the one away to an unknown destination,” Mate explained, adding that the corporation was investigating the case.
Mate also revealed that the kidnappers immediately got in touch with the parents of the child, Malian nationals, demanding a ransom of six million meticais. Negotiations dropped the figure to 2.5 million meticais.
The contacts took place secretly, but the forces of law and order have promised to arrest the kidnappers and bring them to justice.
Notícias has also learned that, in a separate incident, an individual died from blows struck by assailants in a busy street in the Mandimba municipality at the weekend.
The victim was a health technician at a local health facility. According to Mate, robbery seems to have been the motive.
