Four sisters and friends held in Maputo drugs bust

Four sisters have been in custody in Maputo’s 12th district police station since last week, charged with the sale and consumption of drugs. The four siblings were among a group of acquaintances (“group of friends”) being held on the same charge.
According to the police, the group was arrested with the help of Polana Canico residents. Police recovered a number of blunt instruments, including a knife. The arrest was done thanks to popular cooperation, said police.
The members of the group have been exchanging charges amongst themselves, but the four sisters deny any involvement.
The police have said they will continue to launch raids in neighbourhoods such as Polana Canico and Maxaquene in order to dismantle networks engaged in the sale and consumption of drugs, and have repeated calls for the public to denounce traffickers.
According to Maputo police spokesman Orlando Modumane, at least 10 people have been arrested for drug use in neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Maputo in the last few days, and 17 kilograms of cannabis seized.
The Chamanculo “A” and “B” and the Mafalala neighbourhoods are among those where police have intensified their activity.
