Four people disappeared in the Lúrio river, in northern Mozambique, when strong currents caused the artisanal canoe in which they were travelling to capsize, authorities there have announced.
The accident took place on Saturday in Namuno district, Cabo Delgado province. Subsequent searches for the bodies have so far proved fruitless.
The four people belonged to the same family: two women, one of whom was pregnant, and two children.
The family was trying to cross the river to participate in a funeral, but the flow and strength of the current, aggravated by the rainy season, capsized the canoe, made from a tree trunk.
The vessel’s owner managed to swim to the bank and raised the alarm.
Capsizings in Mozambique’s rivers are frequent during the rainy season (October to April), and authorities routinely urge people to avoid travelling in precarious vessels, especially on risky stretches of water.
