Four members of the same family, including a one-year-old child, died when a canoe sank on one of the tributaries of the Zambezi River in central Mozambique’s Sofala province, officials said on Friday.
The sinking occurred on Monday night last week, and was probably caused by overcrowding coupled with rising river flow, said Javite Ismael, commander of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Sofala’s Caia district, quoted by the daily newspaper ‘Notícias’ on Friday.
The canoe was carrying six people, all from the same family, returning from their agricultural plots, he added.
The bodies of the four victims, including the child, were found only hours after the sinking.
