The Mozambican police announced on Friday the recapture of four of the 14 prisoners who escaped a few days earlier from the Mulombo district police command in the central province of Zambezia.
The spokesperson for the Zambezia police, Miguel Caetano, speaking to AIM in the provincial capital, Quelimane, confirmed the re-arrests and said the police are still tracking down the remaining ten escapees.
“We have additional clues for recapturing the rest of them, thanks to the information provided by their colleagues who have now been taken back to the cells”, said Caetano.
The 14 men are accused of various crimes, and had been in custody in the cells at the Mulombo district command awaiting trial. They escaped because a saw was smuggled into the cell, allowing them to cut through the bars on the windows.
Asked whether members of the police had connived in the escape, Caetano said it was too early to draw this conclusion, since investigations into the escape are still under way.
