Four districts of Niassa may be affected in the coming hours by Cyclone Idai, which is expected in the country’s central region soon, Radio Mozambique reports.
The districts of Madimba, Cuamba, Mecanhelas and Metarica end up receiving high volumes of water when neighbouring Zambézia province experiences heavy rainfall.
The head of the technical department and spokesman of the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC), Nelson Jossamo, said that the population should remove property from flood-prone areas.
Tropical depression Idai may influence the weather in the provinces of Sofala, Manica, Zambézia and Inhambane, where very strong winds speeds with ranging from 190 to 210 kilometres per hour are expected, accompanied by rainfall of more than 150 millimetres in 24 hours .
The National Institute of Meteorology also forecasts continuing moderate to strong rainfall with thunderstorms and winds in the provinces of Niassa and Cabo Delgado, and recommends taking precautionary safety measures against risks associated with rain, thunderstorms and high winds.
