Four people were killed and 40 houses burned down on Tuesday night during an attack by an unidentified group of people on the village of Litandacua, northern Mozambique, authorities told Lusa.
Three victims died from machete wounds and one in a fire, the same source revealed. None of the victims had any prominent position of authority in the village, which is in the administrative post of Chai, Macomia district, Cabo Delgado.
The group, of unknown size, stole livestock, robbed at least one shop and set fire to traditional buildings before leaving.
Authorities suspect that the attack is the work of cells of the same group that attacked the police and killed two agents in the village of Mocímboa da Praia in October 2017 and has since plundered a number of remote villages, displacing populations and causing an unknown number of deaths.
Since May 27, at least 29 local residents, 11 alleged attackers and two members of the security forces have died, according to figures from the authorities and witness statements given by the population.
