G20 president S.Africa warns global turmoil hurts poorer nations
Jamii Forums / Mr Melo's website has exposed corruption in government
The co-founder of Tanzanian whistle-blowing website Jamii Forums has been freed on bail following his arrest last week after he refused to give up details of the site’s users to police.
Maxence Melo’s bail condition says that he cannot leave the main city, Dar es Salaam, without the court’s permission.
He is due to appear in court on 29 December after being charged with breaching controversial cybersecurity laws.
He has not yet been asked to plead.
Technology journalist Tefo Mohapi says JamiiForums has played a huge part in exposing corruption in Tanzania.
He says information posted on the site about corrupt deals has led to the resignation of a prime minister, the dissolution of a cabinet and several ministers losing their jobs.
