Mozambique recorded 42 deaths over the Christmas and New Year period, most of them in traffic accidents. The traffic accident figure is down from last year, but cases of sexual and domestic violence have increased.
In its report on the festive season presented yesterday, the Ministry of Health revealed 9,325 incidents for the period 20 December to 2 January, of which 8,879 were trauma cases with road accidents, physical aggression, fireworks and others cited as causes.
Of deaths, 28 resulted from road accidents, five from physical aggression and nine from unspecified accidents.
Although the number of road accidents decreased by 16 percent and road deaths by 21 percent compared to the previous year, there were 156 cases of rape and 290 cases of domestic violence, an increase of 25 percent and 7 percent respectively.
The data presented yesterday by the Ministry of Health was gathered from 27 hospitals throughout the country. About a third of the cases were registered in Maputo’s main health facilities.
