Former president Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique was awarded the Great Necklace of the Order of East Timor yesterday morning by President lly for his contribution to the liberation of East Timor from the colonialist yoke.
Chissano is visiting East Timor to participate in various events. On Sunday, the former president was the guest of honour on the last day of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor party congress, where he gave a speech on the themes of citizenship, peace and nation-building.
Also in Dili, the East Timorese capital, Chissano attended an international conference commemorating the 20th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo and former president José Ramos Horta for their contribution to the Timorese people’s liberation struggle.
At the event, Chissano delivered a speech on Peace and Stability in the Construction of the Rule of law, where he spoke about the Mozambican experience.
