Former mayor of Manhiça to face misappropriation charges

Alberto Chicuamba, the former mayor of Manhiça in Maputo province, is to face charges for misusing funds and abuse of office, Radio Mozambique writes, and the Maputo provincial attorney’s office has already referred the case to the district court.
Alberto Chicuamba is accused of having misused public funds for his own purposes during his 2003 to 2013 mandate. The lawsuit also cites the involvement of building officials, also being heard by the district court.
Radio Mozambique quotes Maputo provincial chief prosecutor Evelina Gomane as saying that the defendant was still at liberty.
“We have a hard task ahead of us. It is not an easy case, but we believe that the court will find in our favour. It is our concern, too, that there is a swift decision on the matter,” she said.
