Veteran of the armed liberation struggle and former Minister of the Interior Manuel António died at Beira Central Hospital on Friday at the age of 79.
His son Madjaque said that his father, who suffered from hypertension, complained of discomfort on Thursday afternoon and was taken to hospital but died during the night. He praised the hospital staff for their efforts to save his father’s life.
The first secretary of the Frelimo Provincial Committee in Sofala, Paulo Majacunene lamented the death of his comrade, who, he said, had done much for Frelimo and the country.
“I personally worked with him for nine years in Manica. He was our representative on the Frelimo Central Committee and an exemplary leader. He leaves a very large void because he still had much to give, especially to the young. He dedicated his life to the nation,” the highest Frelimo official in Sofala said.
Manuel Antonio was Minister of the Interior for 10 years. Before acceding to this position, he was governor of Manica province. Among other party positions, he served as political commissar.
Veteran of the armed liberation with the reserve rank of colonel, Manuel António received the Order Samora Machel in the First Degree in 2014.
