Foreign parties hope that decisions of the XI Frelimo Congress will bring solutions to the challenges of Mozambique.
Delegations from political parties with historical relations of friendship with Frelimo from all over the world have headed to the party’s Central School in Matola for the 11th Frelimo Congress.
After hearing the inaugural address, the parties from abroad acknowledged the political and economic challenges facing the country, but welcomed the congress as an exemplar of internal democracy.
The Russian Communist Party was represented by Central Committee member Vyacheslav Tetekiw, who said that this was an important opportunity to lay out the plan for the country’s development.
“We see great changes. There is economic development of the country. I came for the first time in 1986 and at that time the economic situation in Mozambique [ … ],” he said.

East Timor’s Independent Revolutionary Front, Fretilin, took power on the island in November 1975 with massive popular support, and Timor-Leste declared its independence from Portugal. O País reports that, at the time, Australia and Indonesia accused Fretilin of being Marxist and having strong collectivist tendencies, and noted that similarity of the name to that of the Marxist-Leninist Frelimo movement in Mozambique.
The Fretilin delegate to the Frelimo 11th Congress said the Congress was an opportunity to focus on current challenges.
“Liberating parties must adapt to the challenges without shying away from the values and principles that guided their national liberation struggles. And I believe Frelimo is on this course,” Flávio da Silva said.

The Polisario Front party of the Sahrawi Democratic Arab Republic praised democracy within the Frelimo party. “This is an unmistakable demonstration of democracy. In the case of the party that takes care of the affairs of government, we hope that the points discussed here will reflect the concerns of the most disadvantaged,” El Jalil Hamdi said.
Delegations from Angola, Portugal and China, among other countries, are attending the Congress.
