The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Pacheco, hopes that 2018 will see a consolidation of diplomatic relations, and that the consensus for peace will attract investment to the country.
Quoted by newspaper O Pais, José Pacheco says he believes consensus for an effective peace between President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama is approaching, and that he hopes this will attract investment to Mozambique.
“Peace shows good signs of lasting and conditions are thus created for the swift implementation of our government’s top priorities ” the minister said in his overview of 2017.
Renamo president Afonso Dhlakama recently said that he expected the decentralisation package to be agreed by March of this year.
“If we look at all achievements in the economic, social and diplomatic fields with our partners,” Pacheco said, “we are closing 2017 with a positive evaluation.” He goes on to promise that “in 2018, we will continue to work to consolidate and broaden our friendships”.
“We will work with our partners to expedite the processing of investments processes that are in the pipeline in the perspective of being implemented,” said José Pacheco.
Mozambique has been experiencing unfavourable economic conditions for more than two years now, following cuts in partner support for the state budget after the discovery of what are now known as the ‘illegal debts’. Hence the country needs to attract more investment for stability and socio-economic development.
