The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique, Oldemiro Baloi, has been awarded the Grand Cross of the National Order of Cruzeiro do Sul by the Brazilian government, the country’s highest honour for non-Brazilians.
The award was presented by Brazilian Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira at a ceremony in Maputo.
Oldemiro Baloi promptly shared the distinction with the teams he has led during his career in foreign policy and cooperation since the 1990s.
“The award of this distinction is recognition by successive Brazilian governments of Mozambique’s commitment to the continuous consolidation of a relationship of friendship and brotherhood between our two peoples,” Baloi said.
The National Order of Cruzeiro do Sul is the successor to the Imperial Order of Cruzeiro, instituted on December 1, 1822 by D. Pedro I, less than three months after Brazil’s independence, which was abolished by the Constitution of 24 of February of 1891 and restored with its current title on in 1932.
Oldemiro Baloi, now 62 years old, served as deputy minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1990 and 1994. He was subsequently Deputy Minister of Industry and Tourism and executive director of the Millennium bim bank. In 2008 he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, a position he has held to the present day.
