The president of the Mozambican Traditional Healers Association (Ametramo) in Tete, Lucas Wisse, said yesterday that foreign healers were encouraging the abductions and killings of albinos in the region
Wisse, quoted by AIM, accused healers from Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania while speaking to journalists on African Traditional Medicine Day on Wednesday.
“It is a lie to say that we, the national healers, send people to kill albinos for their organs. This is not a Mozambican habit. Only healers from outside, foreigners from Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia, send people to commit these crimes, which we here in the province are fighting,” he said.
According to Wisse, the college he founded in 1991 in Tete province has 530 healers and affiliate members.
“I know there are more traditional doctors, who are not registered, but our job is to heal people, not to kill them. That is why I say that we do not engage in the abduction and killing of albinos. These stories come from Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia,” said Wisse.
Wisse says the healers’ association is concerned that its good name is being besmirched by rumours that people are murdered on the orders of traditional medicine practitioners.
