Mozambique: Number of forestry operators falls sharply - AIM
National Veterinary Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture
Livestock authorities in Mozambique have banned the movement of cattle in Maputo and Gaza provinces because of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
After an outbreak in Mungazine in Matutuíne district, five hundred infected cattle were detected in the village of Muchocolote.
The measure is aimed at preventing the disease from spreading, and more than twelve thousand head of cattle are at risk in the town.
The head of the Provincial Livestock Services in Maputo said drought was probably a factor contributing to the outbreak.
The affected districts are: Moamba, Magude, Matutuíne, Boane, Namaacha and Manhiça, in Maputo province, and Bilene, Chokwe and Masingir, in Gaza province.
The ban covers all movements in and out of these areas of livestock, beef and manure of cattle, goats, sheep and pigs.
