Ten people from the same family have died of food poisoning in the last 48 hours in the village of Namanha, Cuamba district, Niassa province.
The district government has told ‘Noticias’ that the first seven deaths were recorded in the early hours of Sunday and the remaining three yesterday. It is assumed that the poisoning occurred on Saturday night.
Of the seven people who died on Sunday, two were adult females aged 25 and 55, and the remainder children of between one and two years of age.
Cuamba administrator Simões Valembessa said that health staff evacuated five people to the local rural hospital, two of whom were adults between the ages of 20 and 30 and one a child aged 18 months. All died yesterday.
One woman was discharged and another remained under observation at the hospital yesterday.
Valembessa said that health teams were still looking for the cause of the incident, but preliminary data suggests that the family mistook some fertilizer for cooking salt, and that ammonium chloride had been found in one of the dishes.
“This is an embarrassing situation for the district. In fact, we were taken by surprise by this sad news. Initially, we thought it was cholera, but it is not. At the moment, the situation is under control,” Valembessa said.
