The provincial government of Gaza’s “Food for Work” program is mitigating the impact of drought on the more than 77,000 people affected in the province.
So found Osvaldo Machatine, Director General of the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC), in Massingir a few days ago on a working visit to Gaza to learn about the level of assistance being offered.
The “Food for Work” program gives beneficiaries food in exchange for community service.
Osvaldo Machatine said that the rain which had fallen in the last two weeks had renewed the hopes of local farmers, who had asked the government to allocate seed, a legitimate demand his institution would consider closely.
Machatine said that more sustainable solutions to cyclical droughts, floods and cyclones needed to be studied to help the country adapt to the new realities imposed by climate change. The INGC, he said, was undertaking institutional reform to make it more proactive and address events upstream so that natural adversities would not cause more harm than was already the case.
Machatine expressed admiration for the solidarity he had witnessed in Gaza, to him the clearest evidence that Mozambicans are indeed a generous people with a strong sense of brotherhood, particularly in adversity.
He also highlighted the role of civil society as a whole, working with other sectors to alleviate the suffering of some 270,000 citizens grappling with natural disasters in the country, and praised the contribution of all cooperation partners supporting populations affected by drought and floods.
