The Mozambican government says food aid for this month is guaranteed for 462,000 people affected by the severe drought hitting the southern and central regions of the country.
The government spokesperson, Deputy Health Minister Mouzinho Saide, gave this assurance on Tuesday, at the end of the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet).
He told reporters that the government is coordinating activities to mitigate the effects of the drought. This includes continuing to provide food aid and rehabilitating boreholes for water supply in the drought stricken areas. Saide was confident that food is guaranteed for those affected by drought for the rest of May.
Last month, the government declared a “red alert” for the southern and central provinces due to the drought.
Some rain fell in April in southern Mozambique, but not enough to ensure an agricultural recovery, and so much of this year’s harvest in the affected provinces is regarded as lost.
The Council of Ministers also discussed and approved a new Industrial Police and Strategy. Saide said this sought to contribute to the economic development of the country “through raising production and improving the productivity and quality of industrial production, based on industrial initiatives, using natural resources and technologies that promote employment, and prioritizing increases in the supply of consumer goods and means of production”.
