In Beira, the second largest in Mozambique, the City Council said today that two children, including a seven-month-old baby, died of drowning due to floods hotting several neighbourhoods since Sunday.
At a press conference on floods, Beira mayor Daviz Simango said the seven-month-old child was drowned when water broke into his parents’ house in the Manga-Mungassa neighbourhood.
The second child, four years old, was also found drowned in the backyard of her parents’ residence in the Vaz neighbourhood.
“We call on parents to watch out for minors, because a minor of seven months has to be protected to avoid accidents of this kind,” said Simango.
The rain, continued Beira mayor, falls torrentially and the city’s soils are not permeable enough to avoid flooding.
In addition to flooding homes, floods in Beira also left several roads impassable, hindering the movement of people and goods.
Data from the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) indicate that between Sunday and Monday, Beira recorded a cumulative rainfall of 223.9 millimeters, against a monthly average of 296.2 millimeters.
