A survey by the Technical Council for Disaster Management (CTGC) says that floods and cyclones could affect 1.7 million people in Mozambique up until March 2019.
Paulo Tomas, a spokesman for the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC), the entity that oversees the CTGC, is quoted by daily newspaper Notícias as saying that the forecast corresponds to the worst-case flood and cyclone scenario, anticipated for October of this year to next March.
An intermediate scenario would see 1.5 million people affected by rains, strong winds and floods, while the least severe would affect 870,000, Tomas said, adding that all scenarios were part of the 2018-2019 contingency plan being submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval.
The Mozambican State Budget has already allocated contingency funds of 206 million meticais (about three million Euros) for the forthcoming rainy season.
