Illegal fishing threatens Mozambique’s biodiversity
Road links in some parts of Maputo province may be restricted in the near future by an expected increase of water levels in the Incomáti basin caused by the moderate to strong rainfall forecast for today.
A warning issued yesterday by the National Directorate of Water Resources Management (DNGRH) quoted by Notícias says that “transport constraints will be greatest in Timanguene-Magude; Sabié-Magude and Pajane-Sabié, in Maputo province”.
The increase in the level of the Incomáti river should be seen from today, Thursday, until Monday, February 5.
According to the DNGRH, there is also a moderate risk of flooding in the Umbeluzi river, the Movene River sub-basin, and in urban areas of Maputo and Matola municipalities.
In the city of Maputo, the Maxaquene A and Maxaquene C, Luís Cabral, Chamanculo B and Chamanculo C, Munhuana, Xipamanine, Aeroporto A and Aeroporto B, Mafalala, Urbanização, Laulane, Costa do Sol, Hulene and Magoanine neighbourhoods could be affected.
In Matola, the Machava A, Machava Socimol, Nkobe, Tsalala Ndlavela, São Dâmaso, Unidade D, Infulene, Vale, Singatela, Trevo, Patrice Lumumba, Matola A, Matola D, Matola J, Matola H, Matola F, Khongolote , Fomento and Liberdade neighbourhoods could also see flooding.
In these circumstances, the DNGRH warns people living in the areas specified, and society in general, to take precautionary measures such as moving away from at-risk areas and storing their assets in safe places.
It is also recommended they monitor weather bulletins issued by competent authorities.
At the moment, the levels of the rivers mentioned above are still critical, with the prospect of there being a slight increase following rain in the next few days.
A statement distributed yesterday by the National Meteorological Institute (INAM) forecast moderate to strong rains, with 30 to 50 millimetres in 24 hours, accompanied by severe thunderstorms and moderate winds with gusts, in the districts of Matutuíne, Boane, Namaacha, Marracuene, Manhiça, Moamba, Magude and Matola and Maputo Cities, in Maputo province.
In Gaza province, the forecast is for bad weather in Bilene, Chókwè, Massingir, Mandlakazi, Chibuto, Guijá and Xai-Xai districts.
Sofala and Inhambane may have rain and thunderstorms associated with the same meteorological system.
Mossurize, Sussundenga, Manica, Báruè districts and Gondola and Chimoio cities in Manica province will also be affected.
