Flood warning issued for central Mozambique region

Authorities in Mozambique’s central region issued a flood warning on Thursday, following reports of moderate to heavy rains that continue to push up the water level of river basins in the region.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Administration of Waters, the Zambeze, Pungue, Buzi and Savane rivers could overflow, causing flooding that may interrupt road access and damage infrastructure and farmland.

The flooding is likely to affect urban areas, including the second largest city, Beira, and the fourth largest city, Quelimane.

Water authorities urged the public to leave areas at risk of flooding while the situation is being monitored.

Mozambique is at the end of the rainy season, which usually lasts from October to March.
