The Incomáti River in Moamba district, Maputo province, has registered a sharp rise in flow and could break its banks at any moment. The National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) is calling on nearby communities to leave high-risk areas.
Heavy rainfall in neighbouring eSwatini and South Africa topped over 200 mm in 24 hours, which may cause the Incomáti and Movene to rise and, consequently, bring floods to Maputo province.
“The Incomáti basin will probably register above-normal flow” in the coming days, INGC Maputo delegate Amir Abdula said. “We are already monitoring and working with district authorities to remove farmers and their equipment” from riverside areas, starting with Ressano Garcia and the entire Incomáti river course.
By midday on Monday, the Ressano Garcia flood alert station was just 30 centimetres below alert level, hence the call for riverine communities to take preventive measures.
