Five public and private schools have classes in quarantine due to Covid-19 infections in Maputo province. In Maputo city, one private school has suspended face-to face classes due to the same situation, O País reported on Wednesday.
The education sector is being seriously affected by the Covid-19 ‘third wave’. Health authorities in Maputo province describe the situation as worrying.
“We are in a very worrying situation. We have to face this new wave as a new virus, and not think that it is the same virus with the same form of transmission, because this virus is much more aggressive,” provincial Director of Health, Daniel Chemane explains.
Twelve education sector teachers and administrative staff in Maputo province are currently infected. Five schools in the province, one in the district of Namaacha and another in Moamba, both in the public sector, and three private schools in the city of Matola, have confirmed dozens of cases, Provincial Directorate of Education spokesman José Luís confirmed.
“The situation is caused by positive cases of Covid-19 in students, and for the sake of safeguarding other students, taking into account the recommendations of the health entities, we place the classes with positive cases in students in quarantine,” José Luís said.
The governor of Maputo province, Júlio Paruque, visited two schools in Matola this Wednesday morning to reinforce the message on Covid-19 prevention measures.
“We recommend that at the level of schools, whether public or private, there is no keeping quiet when there are signs of infection in a student or teacher. We are prepared to respond to any situation,” he said.
The capital’s private Mahometan Community School, with about 900 students, has registered nine positive cases, and suspended face-to -face classes for a period of up to two weeks, Director Fernando Mafumo said on Wednesday.
“We suspended face-to-face classes as a precautionary measure in order to preserve the health of our students, because we have been noticing Covid-19 cases increasingly since we resumed the second quarter. But, so far, we have only nine cases – six boys and three girls.”
All stakeholders are urged to redouble their efforts to reverse the country’s spiralling Covid-19 trend by complying assiduously with health protocols.
