Five African Start-Ups Headed to Silicon Valley for Innovation Tour

Five African technology start-ups have been picked out of the 30 that launched at the 2016 edition of DEMO Africa for a tour of Silicon Valley to see how similar companies are doing it in the United States under the DEMO Africa LIONS Programme.

“These companies have a global appeal and have the highest potential to becoming global companies,” said Stephen Ozoigbo, CEO, African Technology Foundation.

They represent Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.

The Innovation Tour of Silicon Valley tour will expose the start-ups to the technology and investment ecosystem in the Silicon Valley. It also aims to create bridges and attract investment from investors from the Valley.

The 2016 DEMO Africa LIONS going on the tour are:

Sortd, South Africa: a product suite that helps people escalate conversations into action right from the source through Email, IM, Skype and Slack.

ConnectMed, South Africa: an online machine learning-enabled telehealth platform that allows patients to seek treatment from doctors over video for common ailments, either directly through app (ConnectMed Prime) or indirectly through clinic partners (ConnectMed Care).

Strauss Energy, Kenya: an energy start-up that sells power generated from the innovative solar roofing tiles that the manufacture to consumers at 75 per cent cheaper that the national grid.

Solstice Home Energy Solutions, Nigeria: a low-cost energy monitoring solution for households that gives insight into energy consumption patterns by monitoring both utility grid and generator usage.

MediaBox, South Africa: a gateway to content in the home than can make any existing television, old or new, a smart device for entertainment, education and access to the internet.

The two week-long tour is a partnership between DEMO Africa and the LIONS@FRICA initiative implemented by the African Technology Foundation.
